The Toyota Ads

The Toyota NZ Television Commercials

Toyota New Zealand TV Commercials started with the duo of Barry Crump and Lloyd Scott "Crumpy and Scotty" in 1982, that series of ads were made up until 1996 the year Barry died.  Toyota went on to make many other Ads with the likes of the Bugger Ad and the Toyota Bulls Ad.  Many of us came to love, and to think of them as the best of the series.

The First Hilux TV Commercial with "Crumpy and Scottie" - 1982
The Hilux ads started with this ad where “City meets Country” Scotty bringing his new 4x4 Hilux out to show his friend Crumpy.  Scottie is busy telling Barry the advantages of the new Hilux; Barry simply puts the Toyota through its paces.  Scotty not prepared for this is bouncing around in the cab and just has to hang on. This was a great ad showing the “Good Keen Man” on the TV screen, most Kiwi’s could relate to him, as being New Zealanders we were always close to the bush, or experienced it sometime in their lives.

Crumpy and Scotty 2nd Hilux TV Commercial - 1984
The 2nd Hilux ad with Barry and Scotty.  Starts out with Scotty being quite proud of his new Hilux.  Barry suggest they should go for a ride up to the hut for a brew. This time Scotty comes prepared for the rough ride in his new ute, but Barry has news for Scotty, its been raining!

Scotty's Revenge Hilux Ad - 1988
In this ad Barry gets driven around the city by Scotty.  Barry has come to the "big smoke" and is on his way to his mates "burial" wedding.  Scotty gives Barry the ride of his life, and this time the shoe is on the other foot!  This ad was only shown 3 times due to NZ Advertising Standards Complaints Board having issues with the ad.

Toyota Corolla Classic - 1989
This ad is a Toyota ad with the Corolla been driven through the rather nice New Zealand country side, and with good music, but this really doesn't compare to the other Crumpy Toyota Ads.

Welcome to our World - 1989
I was unable to find this ad on youtube, but from what i can remember this ad had John Grenell singing the backing music for a series of Toyota TV ads showing Toyota vehicles in the lovely scenery of New Zealand.

Barry Crump Poem/Montage - 1990's
This ad is a poem talking about the Hilux range, with Crumpy's great sense of humour telling it as it is.  The "Good Keen Man" is out in the bush sitting on a log, with Scotty in his sleeping bag in front of the campfire, telling the Toyota stories.

Brian Lochore Camry Ad - 1993
I was unable to find this ad on youtube, but from what i can remember in this ad, Toyota used Brian Lochore New Zealand Rugby Legend, to help promote the new Toyota Camry.

The Two of Us - Barry and Scotty - 1996 to 1997
This ad is the Two Of Us song sung by Crumpy and Scotty.  This was to show the Hilux range over the 13 years the Crumpy/Scotty ads had been running.  This ad was also made to retire Crumpy & Scotty with dignity.

Everyday People Ad - 1998
These series of Ads went around New Zealand showing proud New Zealanders enoying what they do, and being proud to be a Toyota vehicle owner.

Toyota Bugger Ad - 1999
The Bugger Ad, one of my favourites;  takes a series of farming mishaps, and uses the commonly used word to explain what has happened "Bugger" to explain what has happened.  NZ On Screen says "it attracted 120 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority who ruled that “bugger” was unlikely to cause serious offence"

Everyday People Ad - 1999
These series of Ads went around New Zealand showing proud New Zealanders enoying what they do, and being proud to be a Toyota vehicle owner.

The little nifty Toyota Echo car drives its self around Auckland playing the piped piper tune, this is to get the other brands of cars to follow him and lead them to jump off a cliff.

Toyota Bulls Ad - 2005
Two Angus bulls decide to escape the paddock after getting a whiff of the cows next door, seeing the farmers ute door is open they decide to use the ute.  One bull says to the other to “Hoof it!”  Hooning through the sheep paddock, they come across a ram,  just about running over the ram they come to an abrupt stop, and call him a "sheep shagger".  They then take off on their journey once again, driving through the hay barn.  Not wanting to arrive empty handed, they pick up a couple of bails of hay for the lady cows.  The next thing to stop them in their tracks is the cattle stop,  but bulls will be bulls and they find a way to get to the lovely ladies, the jersey cows, by just dropping on in!

Happy Together Toyota Rav4 - 2006
Happy Together Ad is a couple are fighting over the new RAV4.  They both go to extreme measures to stop each other from reaching the Rav4 first.  This ad was withdrawn from NZ televisions after the NZ Advertising Standards Complaints Board expressed the concerns of unsafe practices.

Toyota Yaris Takes On Towies - 2006
In this ad the little Toyota Yaris plays hide and seek in a container yards with some tow trucks.  They all come to their demise in different ways with the final tow truck being caught in the vehicle crusher and crushed into a cube scrap metal.

Toyota Rav4 - 2006
The Toyota Rav4 was filmed in Wellington, with the backing music of Beauty on the TV screen by Lou Bega, great tune. In this ad buildings are falling down, buses toppling over, all over seeing the new Rav4, this vehicle is turning heads.  Nothing will stop the Rav4.  At the same time a gentleman is continuously having mishaps or close mishaps every time the Rav4 drives past.

Corolla the lost keys Ad - 2007
Lost Keys ad, I think most people have been in this place more than once in their lives.  This is where the gentleman has lost his keys for his new Corolla.  He has everyone out to help look for the keys.  Even the police and the TV news get involved, and like most of us they were in his pocket all the time!

We believe a better tomorrow starts today 2009
The Toyota Believe Tree ad. This starts with the young girl playing in her favourite tree.  Then lightening strikes and the tree is up rooted.  The young girl decides to plant one of the berries she had collected earlier and had saved in a tin case up in the tree, picking it up out of the fallen down tree.  The father seen how heartbroken his daughter was, and seeing her planting the berry, he decides to plant a new tree, without the young girl seeing.  So if you believe in something, like the young girl did it, it will happen some way or another!

We believe good things stand the test of time 2009
The Toyota believe engineering company ad.  The new recruit on his first day starting his new job. Having trouble getting to work in the horrible weather.  No jacket or umbrella just his new suit runs into work seeing a line up of nice looking company cars, a line up of Toyota Camrys, asks if all employees get a company car.  He is told his is the "red one", all excited he takes a walk outside with the keys to his new company car, starting with the lastest Camry he walks down a line up of camrys getting older and older, looking for the "red one" finally reaching the end of the line up he sees the red car and points to the car and the other employees having a laugh at his expense.

We believe everyday is an opportunity to improve - 2009
The believe snowboarding ad, the young man is keen on his female colleague and wants to impress her.  He gets up early each morning to practice the ski jump where he works as a waiter.  Not being able to get over it without fall off, he tries every morning by setting the alarm clock for 5.00am.  Eventually he makes it, so excited he made the jump he forgets to stop and crashes into the window of the restaurant where the young women is standing watching.

We believe if you can dream, it you can do it - 2010
The believe flying fox ad, the young boy feel down because Billy Scott is saying his batch is better the boys. Telling his father this, the father has an idea of how to make their batch better than young Billy Scotts, he builds a great flying fox from their house on the hill with the great views to the pontoon in the sea.  They both ride this great flying fox with a tyre hanging off it, to end up have a great big splash into the see.  I think this would be every young boys and big boys dream to have one of these flying foxes.
